The Great Blue Heron
I photographed this Great Blue Heron on the Pewaukee River yesterday 06/16/2010. He was fishing and it was remarkable to see him catch the fish you see in the pictures. He started to walk into the shallows from the center of the river. He craned out his neck to peak into the shallows. Then his neck position changed as his focus increased. Somehow the eyes on the side of his head were always looking down in the water; it doesn’t seem possible by looking at his head. It seems just before he was ready to strike his neck somewhat coiled.
Then all of a sudden his beak went down in the water and he caught a fish on the first try. He then walked out of his fishing spot with beak still clenched and stood for awhile in the middle of the small river before he swallowed the small fish. Then a group of small children joined me by my side to watch him. After a little while he flew to another fishing spot, as some of us fishermen are prone to do.
